South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) is a special purpose vehicle formed to develop a major new container terminal within the existing Port of Colombo. SAGT had been granted a 35-year concession to expand and operate the container terminal on Queen Elizabeth Quay in the Port of Colombo.
The Port of Colombo was, at the time, capacity and performance constrained. It was operating at 25% over its realistic operating capacity and thereby causing significant shipment volumes to be diverted to alternative trans-shipment facilities. SAGT was set up to handle some of the excess capacity and was well positioned to gain an increasing market share in the growing South Asian shipment market. The terminal became fully operational in September 2003. The business has consistently delivered strong performance driven by management's success in improving efficiency, service & quality levels.
