TitleManager, Responsible Investment
“ESG aspects are not only a business risk that can erode value but an opportunity to maximise value at investee companies.”
James joined Actis’ Responsible Investment team in January 2016, where he works with portfolio companies on environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects to enhance value.
A stint working and travelling in Southern and Eastern Africa in 2000 ignited James’ interest in emerging markets. Since then, he has worked in growth markets around the world where ESG enhancements have a material impact on the value and sustainability of a business.
James was attracted to Actis by a respect for the way ESG aspects are fully integrated into the firm’s decision making processes: “core to be being a responsible investor” in his mind. “ESG aspects are not only viewed as a business risk that can erode value but an opportunity to maximise value at investee companies” he says. James was impressed by Actis’ approach to working with its portfolio companies and the fact that the principles of responsible investing are fully integrated into the investment thesis, with all deal doers engaged on ESG aspects of the investment.
To James, the positive power of capital means that Actis builds and grows sustainable businesses with benefits to staff, suppliers and consumers – the entire value chain – that last beyond the significant benefits to investors.
Before Actis, James worked at CDC Group plc from 2013 and before that, he spent eight years at Ramboll-Environ, formerly ENVIRON. James has an M.Sc. Applied Meteorology & Climatology and a B.Sc. Geography from the University of Birmingham.
