Wind energy in Nicaragua

On the shores of Lake Nicaragua, 125km south of the capital Managua, a new wind farm is generating electricity.

Eolo, which consists of 22 2MW wind turbine generators, a new substation and connection lines, began supplying electricity to Nicaragua’s national grid in November 2013. The project was implemented by Actis portfolio company Globeleq Mesoamerica Energy, a leading developer, owner and operator of power generation assets across Central America. Eolo is the second operating wind plant in Nicaragua, displacing more expensive and less environmentally friendly thermal generation sources in the country.

Eolo has been registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol enabling it to earn carbon credits to sell into the international carbon trading markets.
