Rahul Agrawal coverage in Deal Street Asia: Asia’s power needs expose funding gap for new energy businesses

Rahul Agrawal, Managing Director, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, featured in Deal Street Asia’s coverage of its Asia PE-VC Summit 2026 in Singapore, which examined the funding gap facing new energy businesses in Asia.

The article reports that limited equity is available for new energy companies, as large infrastructure funds favour bigger, established businesses. Panellists said this gap creates opportunities for investors willing to build renewable energy platforms that can later attract larger funds.

Rahul highlighted the opportunity in developing renewable energy businesses across India and Southeast Asia. He said it requires executing a full business plan, not simply buying assets, and that structural demand for power and energy security extends beyond AI. He added that local depth takes years to build.

Rahul Agrawal, Managing Director, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, commented:

“You can’t just buy and sit there for returns to come. In our markets, there are not many things to buy also because the infrastructure is generally still getting built out. These are still growth markets and developing countries.

“It’s not about presence; it’s about depth. You can’t just have an office. You need to have people who have been doing that stuff for several years, and it takes time to develop that.”
