Marina Johnson

Principal, Sustainability

Office: London

Team: Sustainability

Marina joined the Actis Sustainability team in 2019, bringing over 10 years of experience consulting in Social and Environmental performance for infrastructure assets in developing markets. She was attracted to the fact that responsible investment is part of Actis’ DNA. The belief that strong ESG management presents not just risk mitigation for businesses but value enhancing opportunities is shared throughout the firm.

Before joining Actis, Marina was a senior sustainability consultant at ERM and prior to this a social performance consultant at AECOM. She undertook ESG due diligence and assessed the sustainability impacts of large-scale infrastructure, energy and extractive projects, driving compliance with international best practice and securing Sustainable Financing.

Marina has always been attracted to the huge scope that exists for private capital investment to make significant impact when deployed meaningfully. Growing up in a French household, Marina was grateful for the exposure it gave her to integrate with different cultures professionally. She started her career with a focus in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in West Africa.

Marina holds an MSc in Geography from Oxford University, is a Chartered Environmentalist through IEMA and a Certified Expert in Sustainable Finance through the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management-UNEP.

There is a huge need for sustainable infrastructure and power services globally as we align with the energy transition. As an investor, if you know your markets well and can navigate the risks within these – there is incredible opportunity. Actis is uniquely placed to invest in markets where ESG challenges are very real, and conversely that provide great potential for value creation.
