Adrian Mucalov, Partner and Head of Long Life Infrastructure at Actis, commented:
“What we look for in principle are markets that have a demonstrated history of successful private-sector infrastructure investment across business and political cycles.
“Our expertise is also to analyze the specific risk protections provided in typical infrastructure businesses, which may include long-term contracts, FX [foreign exchange] protection, inflation and/or interest rate protection, government guarantees, political risk insurance, credit enhancements, or other risk mitigants depending on the nature of the asset. These types of protections typically make infrastructure investing more resilient and defensive in different macro cycles.
“There is a misalignment between perceived risk and real risk. Many of Actis’s investors understand this. They choose to invest in these markets either to diversify away from developed markets or to seek alpha returns that could not otherwise be achieved by similar infrastructure investments in developed markets.”
