Actis’ Asanka Rodrigo, Partner, Energy Infrastructure, and Shami Nissan, Partner, Head of Sustainability, recently spoke with DealStreetAsia about the growing energy and digital infrastructure opportunities in Asia. Shami Nissan, Partner, Head of Sustainability at Actis, commented:

“General Atlantic is a big investor in technology, and has fantastic existing relationships and investments in technology companies and hyperscalers — clients that are looking for digital infrastructure to keep providing their own services. That’s quite relevant in Asia, where we know that there’s a huge mismatch in demand and supply of digital infrastructure, combined with what we view as really favourable demographic trends.

“Digital infrastructure, in particular data centres, is also an opportunity that we think is exciting. There are real opportunities in terms of origination and investment, but also appetite from asset allocators to invest in those sectors.

“[The Indian government] has really focused on creating an environment that’s attractive to foreign investors, putting in place incentives, structures, frameworks and auctions that make it a lot easier and more attractive for investors. India is a country in which we’ve repeatedly invested in renewables, and we continue to see exciting opportunities there.”

Asanka Rodrigo, Partner, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, said:

“Governments recognise that when they want to have more power capacity, [renewable energy] is the cheapest way to do it, and with batteries now you can make it work much better. If you create an enabling [policy] environment, you can do a lot.”
