Asanka Rodrigo, Managing Director, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, has been interviewed by DealStreetAsia for its GreenStreet edition titled “Opportunities for climate adaptation, resilience, and efficiencies,” exploring how Actis is positioning its US$560 million Asia Climate Transition strategy as a bridge between utility-scale renewables and growing opportunities in decarbonisation focused on efficiency, grids and sustainable transport, particularly in Asia.

The article details how this strategy adheres to Actis’ core investment principles of investing equity only in hard assets with long-term revenue visibility, while targeting smaller, more distributed opportunities such as commercial and industrial renewables. About half the fund has been deployed into four deals: a joint investment with EDF India in smart metering; Singapore-based HVAC company Barghest Building Performance; a small utility-scale renewable project in South Korea; and a co-investment with Actis Energy 5 in a Terra Solar project in the Philippines. The portfolio is expected eventually to comprise six to seven investments, with the bulk of capital steered towards Southeast Asia.

Asanka Rodrigo, Managing Director, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, commented:

“To get to Net Zero, about 30% of savings have to come from renewables, and about another 30% have to come from more efficient consumption of power. Energy efficiency – smart meters and other energy solutions – it’s more of a distributed implementation. The amount of capital you can deploy in one go and how you scale up is more difficult to do. If you do it, there’s a huge reward for it, but implementation is harder, so that’s why it’s taken longer for people to focus on these areas and invest.”

“As emerging market infrastructure becomes a bigger asset class, the track record is there, and you’re able to look at real examples in developed and growth markets and do comparisons.”
