As the world’s sustainability challenges become more evident than ever, the COP28 conference offers a huge opportunity to advance the commitment to global climate mitigation and adaptation strategies, as well as to a just transition.

Our approach supports COP28’s four pillars for climate action: fast-tracking the energy transition; fixing climate finance; focusing on nature, people, lives and livelihoods; and full inclusion. I have recently touched down for a business trip to China following a whirlwind week in Dubai at COP28. And as I write this, great news has broken through from COP, with an agreement reached that calls for a move away from fossil fuels for the first time. This alone makes this COP different to previous editions.

The COP 28 conference in the UAE is likely to offer a huge opportunity to advance the commitment to global climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. The discussions on loss and damage which took place at last year’s event, for example, should be taken further, since emerging markets and developing countries are at the sharp end of dealing with the impacts of climate change.

If we are serious about a global energy transition – one that minimises the number of people, assets and countries left behind by this colossal task – it’s only right that the biggest fossil fuel producers are actively and constructively engaged in the conversation. A speedy and successful energy transition in these countries is arguably the most pressing challenge because they have such a huge role to play.

This year’s COP 28 conference matters and represents an opportunity we cannot afford to miss to mitigate climate change and advance climate adaption strategies. Although much progress has been made on renewables over the past decade, the world needs to come out of COP with an agreement that accelerates the transition from a fossil-fused based global economy to one based around clean energy.
